Microtrips – a big adventure on a small scale

Not all of us have a month free in the calendar for an expedition across Asia or a climb in the Andes, but that's no reason to keep putting travel dreams off to an endless "later". A great alternative that keeps gaining popularity is the microtrip. These are usually short weekend, or even few-hour, getaways that can give you just as much of a thrill as far-flung escapades.

Why is a microtrip worth trying?

Above all, it comes down to simplicity. You don't have to plan anything big. A bit of willingness, a backpack and a little creativity are enough to break out of the daily routine and feel the same rush as on a grand expedition. Microtrips are worth a try for a few reasons. First of all, they're within everyone's reach, so even if you only have one free Saturday, you'll always find something interesting just around the corner. On top of that, they go easy on your budget, because the cost of long flights or pricey accommodation drops out while the experience stays every bit as strong. They're also a brilliant workout in resourcefulness and flexibility, and a great chance to see how your gear actually performs before you set off on something bigger.

Where to start?

If you're wondering where to start, there's no shortage of options. You can pack a hammock, a sleeping bag and a headlamp and spend a night in the woods near home. It's the perfect chance to taste a light take on survival. If you'd rather do something more urban, I'd recommend a spontaneous city break; a cheap last-minute ticket is all it takes to soak up the feel of another city in a single weekend, with no rigid planning. Another great option is a night trip with a camera, out to hunt for the stars or the Milky Way.

Light, compact, mindful

Just remember that with microtrips the key is light and compact kit. It's a great way to live more consciously and actively, without reaching for excuses. Don't wait for the perfect moment, because adventure doesn't always wait at the end of the world. Sometimes all it takes is to step out the door and look around you.
